Our Mission

Why we built this

“Every aspiring commercial driver deserves access to high-quality, exam-realistic practice — regardless of which trucking school they attend or which state they test in.”

Founded by a team of CDL holders, trucking school instructors, and software engineers who all failed their first CDL attempt — and vowed to make sure no one else has to.

Our Story

From Failed First Attempts to a 50,000-Driver Community

CDL Practice Test was founded in 2019 by a small group of commercial drivers and trucking school instructors who shared a frustrating common experience: every one of us failed our first CDL knowledge test. Not because we hadn’t studied — we had. We failed because the free study materials available online didn’t match the format, the wording, or the depth of the real DMV exam.

The state CDL manual is 180+ pages of dense regulatory text. The free quizzes scattered across the internet were outdated, poorly written, and often factually wrong. Trucking schools charged thousands for in-person prep, but their question banks hadn’t been refreshed in years. There had to be a better way.

So we built one. We started with 200 hand-written General Knowledge questions, each one reviewed by at least two veteran CDL holders. We mapped every question to the specific section of the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Manual it tests. We wrote detailed explanations for every answer — not just “the correct answer is B” but “B is correct because Section 6.2.4 of the FMCSA manual states…”

Five years later, our question bank has grown to over 2,900 questions across 53 practice tests, covering General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, every major endorsement, and state-specific variations. More than 50,000 aspiring commercial drivers have used our platform to pass their CDL exam — and we read every single piece of feedback they send.

What We Stand For

Four Principles That Guide Every Question We Write

We turn down shortcuts that other practice test sites take. Here’s what we will and won’t do — and why it matters for your CDL exam.

Accuracy Over Volume

We’d rather have 2,900 correct questions than 10,000 questionable ones. Every question is reviewed against the current FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Manual before it goes live, and re-reviewed quarterly. If a regulation changes, the question changes — within 30 days.

Explanations, Not Just Answers

Memorizing answers doesn’t make you a safer driver — understanding them does. Every question includes a written explanation that cites the specific FMCSA manual section, real-world driving context, and why the wrong answers are wrong. You leave knowing the rule, not just the letter.

Veteran-Written Content

Every question is written or reviewed by a CDL holder with at least 5 years of over-the-road experience. Our editorial team includes former trucking school instructors, hazmat-certified drivers, and a former FMCSA compliance auditor. No freelance writers who’ve never sat in a cab.

Always Current

FMCSA regulations, hours-of-service rules, and ELD requirements change. We monitor FMCSA, DOT, and state CDL manual updates monthly and push question updates within 30 days. You’ll never study from a question that’s been wrong for two years.

How Every CDL Question Gets Written

Every question in our bank goes through a 4-step process before it goes live — and is re-reviewed quarterly against the latest regulations.

1

Written by a CDL Holder

A practicing CDL holder with at least 5 years of experience drafts the question, the four answer choices, and a first-pass explanation citing the relevant FMCSA manual section.

2

Reviewed by a Second Driver

A second CDL holder — usually a trucking school instructor — independently answers the question without seeing the answer key. If they disagree with the intended answer, the question goes back to the author.

3

Compliance Audit

Our FMCSA compliance editor verifies that the cited regulation is current, the wording matches the manual, and the answer is correct under the latest federal and state rules.

4

Quarterly Re-Review

Once live, every question is re-reviewed at least once per quarter against the current FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Manual and any new state-specific rule changes.

Our Primary Sources

Every question in our bank traces back to one or more of these authoritative sources. We never write a question from memory or from another practice test site.

FMCSA CDL Manual

The federal Commercial Driver’s License Manual — the source of truth for every General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination question.

State CDL Manuals

All 50 state CDL manuals, used to verify state-specific variations on questions where state rules differ from federal baselines.

FMCSA Regulations (49 CFR)

Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations — the binding federal rules on hours of service, ELDs, drug & alcohol testing, and disqualification.

Free sites tell you “7 out of 10.” We show you exactly which FMCSA manual sections you’re weak in, your score trend over time, and a predicted real-exam score.

Cited Explanations

Every explanation cites the exact section of the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Manual the answer comes from. You can verify every claim against the primary source.

Real Instructors Behind It

Other practice test sites are run by content farms. Ours is run by former trucking school instructors and a former FMCSA compliance auditor. When you email us, a CDL holder replies.

30-Day Update SLA

When FMCSA publishes a rule change, our questions update within 30 days — guaranteed. We publish a quarterly changelog so you can see exactly what changed.

Driver Stories

What Drivers Tell Us

We read every piece of feedback drivers send us. Here’s what a few of them had to say after passing their CDL exam.

“I’d been driving box trucks for years but kept putting off getting my Class A. The Air Brakes section on this site finally made the system make sense to me — the explanations walk you through exactly what’s happening in the brake chambers. Passed General Knowledge and Air Brakes both on the first try.”

TL

Tommy Lawrence

Class A CDL, Dallas TX

“Coming out of trucking school, I felt like I’d memorized the manual but didn’t really understand it. The cited explanations on every question here changed that — I could actually look up the FMCSA section and see WHY an answer was right. Felt like having an instructor looking over my shoulder.”

AK

Aisha Khan

Class A + H Endorsement, Atlanta GA

“I’m a trucking school instructor in Ohio and I recommend this site to every student who walks through our doors. The question quality is the highest I’ve seen — and the quarterly updates mean I’m not sending my students to study from rules that changed two years ago.”
